Thompson Benton Ferguson

Thompson Benton Ferguson (* 17th March 1857 in Des Moines , Iowa ; † 14. February 1921 in Oklahoma City ) was an American politician of the Republican Party . He was governor of Oklahoma from 1901 to 1906 .

Life

Born near Des Moines, he moved to Kansas when he was young . He was a teacher and a Methodist pastor. In 1889 he took part in the Oklahoma Land Run (settlement of previously protected Indian areas) and secured a claim in the area of Oklahoma City . But Ferguson moved back to Kansas, where he worked as a writer and editor. There he was a recognized leader of the Republican Party of his state. Due to his party work, however, he came back to Oklahoma and was between 1901 and 1906 governor of the Oklahoma Territory , where he also took over the leadership position of his party in Oklahoma. After his tenure, he moved to Watonga and ran a newspaper until his death in 1921.
