Timothy John ("Tim") Roemer (born October 30, 1956 in South Bend , Indiana ) is an American diplomat and politician ( Democratic Party ). He was a member of the US House of Representatives for Indiana from 1991 to 2003 and was US Ambassador to India from 2009 to 2011.

Family and education

Roemer attended Penn High School in Mishawaka and studied at the University of California at San Diego , where he received his Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1979 . He then continued his studies at the University of Notre Dame (Indiana), where he graduated in 1982 with a Master of Arts (MA) in political science. In Notre Dame he received his PhD in the same subject in 1986 for a thesis entitled The Senior Executive Service: Retirement and Public Personnel Policy .

He has been married to Sally Johnston, a daughter of the former US Senator from Louisiana , Bennett Johnston , since 1989 . You have four children.

Political advancement to Congress

His political career began in the 1970s when he served on the staff of Congressman John Brademas (Indiana) in 1978/79 . From 1985 to 1989 he was on the staff of US Senator Dennis DeConcini ( Arizona ) and in 1988 taught for one year at the American University in Washington, DC

In the election to the 102nd Congress in 1990, Roemer managed to win a mandate ; thus he represented from January 3, 1991 the 5th constituency of the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives . In the congress Roemer campaigned primarily for foreign and security policy as well as for the education system. More conservative than his party ( Pro-Life ) on socio-political issues , he often voted on the left in foreign policy. During the presidency of Bill Clinton, he refused to approve his 1993 economic program and the North American Free Trade Agreement . During the Bush administration , he campaigned for the No Child Left Behind Act and for the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security , even if he voted against the ultimate design of this agency. After five successful re-elections, Roemer did not run again in 2002 for the 2002 election and left Congress on January 3, 2003.

9/11 Commission and Adviser

Shortly before the end of his parliamentary activity, Roemer became a member of the commission of inquiry established in November 2002 into the 9/11 attacks , of which he was a member until it was concluded in August 2004. He caused a stir among supporters of the conspiracy theories on September 11, 2001 when he inadvertently said in an interview broadcast live on CNN on September 11, 2006 that the Pentagon had been hit by a missile five years earlier . Although he corrected himself immediately, the corresponding excerpt from the interview has since been found in many documents of the 9/11 Truth Movement .

In 2005 Roemer was a candidate for chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee and received the support of Congressional leaders Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid , but was defeated by Howard Dean . In the presidential election campaign of 2008 he supported Barack Obama early and vehemently with many public appearances, already in the Democratic Primary against Hillary Clinton and in the main election campaign against John McCain ; Obama subsequently succeeded in winning Roemer's home state of Indiana, the first Democrat since 1964.

Roemer worked as a consultant for various political think tanks such as the Mercatus Center and as head of the Center for National Policy in Washington, DC

Ambassador to India

In May 2009 Roemer was named the United States' 21st  Ambassador to India by President Barack Obama , which many attribute to his gratitude for the campaign assistance he had given. On July 10, it was confirmed by the US Senate. Roemer started work on July 23rd and presented Indian President Pratibha Patil with his accreditation papers on August 11th. In April 2011, Roemer announced that he would give up the office of ambassador for family reasons, even if other reasons were speculated. A broken arms deal was brought up as a reason for Roemer's annoyance. He resigned on June 30, 2011.

Since his return to the United States, Roemer has worked as a lobbyist for APCO Worldwide , has taught at various universities and has served as a consultant on various committees.
