Jesse Overstreet

Jesse E. Overstreet (born December 14, 1859 in Franklin , Indiana , †  May 27, 1910 in Indianapolis , Indiana) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1909 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jesse Overstreet attended his homeland public schools including Franklin High School , which he graduated from in 1877, and Franklin College , from which he graduated in 1882. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1886, he began to work in this profession in Franklin.

Politically, Overstreet was a member of the Republican Party . In 1892 he was a member of the Indiana state board. In the congressional elections of 1894 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded George W. Cooper on March 4, 1895 . After six re-elections, he was able to complete seven legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1909 . Since 1897 he represented there as the successor to Charles L. Henry the seventh district of his state. During his time as Congressman, the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . From 1899 to 1903 Overstreet was chairman of the Justice Department's Expenditure Control Committee; between 1903 and 1909 he headed the Postal Committee.

In 1908 he was defeated by the Democrat Charles A. Korbly . After leaving the US House of Representatives, Overstreet returned to practice as a lawyer. He died on May 27, 1910 in Indianapolis and was buried in Columbus .
