Henry Benton Sayler (born March 31, 1836 in Montgomery County , Ohio , †  June 18, 1900 in Huntington , Indiana ) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1875 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Sayler was a cousin of Milton Sayler (1831-1892), who sat in Congress for the State of Ohio from 1873 to 1879 . In his youth he came to Clinton County , Indiana, where he attended public schools. After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar in 1856, he began to work in this profession in Eaton (Ohio). During the Civil War Sayler served in the Union Army , in which he rose to major .

Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1872 he was elected in the tenth constituency of Indiana in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded William Williams on March 4, 1873 , who moved to the newly created 13th district. Since he refused to run again in 1874, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1875 .

After retiring from the US House of Representatives, Henry Sayler was a judge in the 28th Judicial District of Indiana from 1875 to 1900. He died on June 18, 1900 in Huntington, where he was also buried.
