Career
Edward McGaughey attended the public schools in his home country and was then employed as a deputy clerk in the Putnam County administration. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1835, he began to work in Greencastle in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Whig Party . He was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives in 1839 and 1840 ; between December 1842 and February 1843 he was a member of the State Senate .
In 1842, McGaughey ran unsuccessfully for Congress . In the elections of 1844 he was then elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the seventh constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded Joseph Wright on March 4, 1845 . Until March 3, 1851 he could spend another legislative period in Congress. In 1850 he was not re-elected.
In 1849 Edward McGaughey was named governor of the Minnesota Territory by President Zachary Taylor . However, he was unable to take up this office because the US Senate refused to give its approval. In 1852 he moved to California, where he died in San Francisco on August 6th.
