Calvin Cowgill (born January 7, 1819 in Clinton County , Ohio , †  February 10, 1903 in Wabash , Indiana ) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1881 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Calvin Cowgill attended public schools in his home country. In 1836 he came to Indiana with his parents. After studying law and admission to the bar, he began working in this profession in Wabash. At the same time he embarked on a political career. He was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives in 1851 and 1865 . Between 1855 and 1859, Cowgill served as a chamberlain in Wabash County . During the Civil War , he served as Provost Marshal in the eleventh judicial district of Indiana between 1862 and 1865 .

Politically, Cowgill was a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1878 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eleventh constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded James La Fayette Evans on March 4, 1879 . Since he refused to run again in 1880, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1881 .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Calvin Cowgill practiced law again. He died in Wabash on February 10, 1903.
