George W. Cromer

George Washington Cromer (born May 13, 1856 in Anderson , Indiana , †  November 8, 1936 in Muncie , Indiana) was an American politician . Between 1899 and 1907 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Cromer attended the common schools and then the Wittenberg College in Springfield ( Ohio ). He then studied until 1882 at Indiana University in Bloomington . In 1883, Cromer published the Muncie Times newspaper. After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar in 1886, he began to work in Muncie in this profession. Between 1886 and 1890 he was a prosecutor in the 46th Judicial District of Indiana.

Politically, Cromer was a member of the Republican Party . In 1892 and 1894 he was a member of the state executive committee of his party. Between 1894 and 1898 he was mayor of Muncie. In the congressional election of 1898 , Cromer was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded Charles L. Henry on March 4, 1899 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1907 .

In 1906 he was defeated by the Democrat John Adair . After leaving the US House of Representatives, Cromer practiced again as a lawyer in Muncie. He died there on November 8, 1936.
