Philip Riley Sharp (born July 15, 1942 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American politician . Between 1975 and 1995 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Philip Sharp attended Washington Elementary School in Elwood, Indiana. In 1960 he graduated from the Wendell Wilkie High School there . He studied at DePauw University in Greencastle until 1961 and then until 1964 at Georgetown University in Washington, DC , where he later also studied philosophy until 1974.

Politically, Sharp joined the Democratic Party . Between 1964 and 1969 he was on the staff of US Senator Vance Hartke . From 1969 to 1974 he taught at Ball State University in Muncie . In the 1974 congressional election , Sharp was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the tenth constituency of Indiana, where he succeeded David W. Dennis on January 3, 1975 . After nine re-elections, he was able to complete ten legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1995 . Since 1983 he represented there as the successor to Floyd Fithian the second district of his state. In the meantime he was chairman of the Subcommittee on Energy and Power .

In 1994 Sharp declined to run again. He later became director of the political faculty at Harvard University , also known as the John F. Kennedy School of Government . Today he is President of the Board of Directors of Duke Energy Corporation and Vice Chairman of the Energy Foundation . He also heads the non-partisan think tank Resources for the Future .
