Jill Long Thompson
Jill Lynette Long Thompson (born July 15, 1952 in Warsaw , Indiana ) is an American politician ( Democrat ). Between 1989 and 1995 she represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Jill Long, her maiden name, attended Columbia City Joint High School and then studied at Valparaiso University until 1974 . She then graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington by 1984 , where she studied philosophy, among other things. Until 1989 she lectured at various universities in Indiana. She also worked as a business consultant. At the same time she began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .
Between 1984 and 1986 she was a member of the Valparaiso City Council . In 1986, Jill Long ran for the US Senate , but lost to later US Vice President Dan Quayle . A congressional candidacy in 1988 was just as unsuccessful. After the resignation of MP Dan Coats , she was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC at the due by-election for the fourth seat of Indiana , where she was her on March 28, 1989 took up a new mandate. After two re-elections, she could remain in Congress until January 3, 1995 . In the 1994 congressional elections, she was defeated by Republican Mark Souder .
After her time in the US House of Representatives, Jill Long taught for some time at the John F. Kennedy School of Government , which is part of Harvard University . Between 1995 and 2001 she worked for the US Department of Agriculture . In 2002 she tried unsuccessfully to return to Congress. A candidacy for governor of Indiana also failed in 2008: it was clearly defeated by Mitch Daniels with 58:40 percent of the vote.
From 2010 to 2015, Jill Long Thompson served on the Board of Directors of the Farm Credit Administration , to which she was seconded by President Barack Obama . She is married to the pilot Don Thompson; the couple live on a farm near Argos .
