Warsaw is a city in Kosciusko County in the US state of Indiana and the seat of the county administration . The name is derived from the Polish city of Warsaw .

history

On October 21, 1836 WH Knott opened up the first site in what is now Warsaw. The first house was built by Matthew D. Springer on the edge of what was then the swamp. It was also used as a pub on the side. The first manufacturing company, a forge, and a sale of chairs by a John Giselman were also located in the present-day town in 1836. On February 11, 1837, the post office was founded under Jacob Baker and in 1840 the first school building, which was used until 1872 as "Union Scholl". In August 1845, the county's first newspaper, the Kosciusko Republican, printed in Monoquet , was published, followed by the Warsaw Democrat in 1848, published by TL Graves. The town's first cemetery was opened in 1848. It is certain that Warsaw was the largest town in the county in 1850 with 304 inhabitants and 64 houses. When the place was recognized as a city on March 25, 1854 , it had 752 inhabitants. In 1854 a railway station of the "Pennsylvania Railroad" was built in Warsaw. However, it was not until 1858 that Warsaw's first stone building was built. In 1934, John Dillinger and his gang raided the police station in Warsaw.

economy

From 1885 Revra DePuy began to deal with orthopedic technology. In 1895 he founded "DePuy Manufacturing". Justin O. Zimmer (1884–1951), who he employed in 1905 , went into business for himself in 1927 with his own orthopedic technology company. In addition to these two companies, which founded Warsaw's orthopedic technology industry, other such companies have settled in the place. This made Warsaw one of the centers of orthopedic technology. Almost one in three of the 12,415 inhabitants (2000 census) works for one of the major medical technology companies Zimmer , DePuy or Biomet .
