The orthopedic technology trade belongs to the health professions and to the group of health trades .

job profile

Orthopedic technology mechanics manufacture technical aids for patients according to a doctor's prescription. These are used for the conservative treatment of orthopedic problems and damage to the postural and musculoskeletal system, joint misalignments and instabilities. These include prostheses and orthotics . Orthopedic technicians also manufacture special bandages and corsets , as well as rehabilitation technology products such as seat shells or individual wheelchairs . Depending on the aid, try-ons are already carried out during the production process in order to check the fit of the aid and to correct it if necessary. They advise their customers on the choice of the right aid, carry out anamnesis , measure affected body parts, create construction drawings and models. They also repair, maintain and adjust the aids and instruct them in their operation and handling.

The training ordinance has been in force in Germany since August 1, 2013.

Structure of training

The training takes place in the dual system , that is, they place at the venues for training company and vocational school instead. In-company training is deepened in one of three main areas. The choices are:

Orthopedic technology forms the interface between medicine (especially (technical) orthopedics ), technology and craft.

Journeyman examination

The trainees must be in the final examination Stretched demonstrate that they are necessary for the exercise of the profession vocational skills acquired. Part 1 of the extended journeyman's examination takes place at the end of the second year of training. 30% of the examination results from Part 1 are included in the final grade. The remaining 70% are achieved in part 2 of the extended journeyman's examination at the end of the training. In the journeyman's examination there are written and practical examination areas. Training in Austria

In Austria the profession of orthopedic technician is trained. The training is also dual, i.e. in the training company and in the vocational school. The apprenticeship lasts three and a half years. During the training, all apprentices are taught a general part (basic module). From the 3rd year of apprenticeship onwards, there is training in at least two of the three following areas:

  • Orthosis technology
  • Prosthetic technology
  • Rehabilitation technology.

The training concludes with a final apprenticeship examination, which is divided into a practical and theoretical examination. The practical examination includes the subjects of test work and technical discussion and the theoretical examination includes the areas of “Basics of Orthopedic Technology”, “Technology” and “Applied Mathematics”. In Austria, the occupations bandagist and orthopedic shoemaker, which are related to orthopedic technology, are taught.

Training in Switzerland

In Switzerland the trainees learn the profession of orthopedist. Training here takes four years.

Historical development of training in Germany

In the orthopedic technology trade, the new ordinance on journeyman training to become an orthopedic technician has been in effect since August 1, 2013 . Before that, the ordinance on the training occupation of orthopedic mechanic and bandagist with a training period of three and a half years had been in force since 1996. At that time, this profession was merged from the two previously independent professions orthopedic mechanic and bandagist, each with a three-year training period.

Associations, trade fairs and organizations

Most of the orthopedic technology companies are members of the relevant (state) guild for orthopedic technology. These guilds in turn are members of the Federal Association for Orthopedic Technology (BIV-OT). The responsible trade association is BG ETEM (energy, textiles, electronics, media products).

The leading trade fair OTWorld (until 2012 Orthopädie + Reha-Technik ) takes place every two years (always in the years with an even year) in May at the Leipzig Exhibition Center. In the uneven years the Expolife takes place in Kassel .

Many vocational school teachers for orthopedic technology are members of the working group of teachers for orthopedic technology and sponsors (ALLOF e.V.).
