history
The land on which Valparaiso was built was bought by the Potawatomi Indians in October 1832 . At that time there was the small Indian village of Chipuaw on the Sauk Trail. The city of Portersville was founded on this land in 1836. Shortly thereafter, the city was renamed Valparaiso because the city's founder David Porter fought near Valparaíso (Chile) during the War of 1812 .
