Porter County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Valparaiso .

The county is located in northwest Indiana, borders Lake Michigan to the north and has an area of ​​1,351 square kilometers, of which 268 square kilometers, or 19.84 percent, are water surface. It is bounded by the counties: LaPorte County (east), Starke County (southeast), Jasper County (south) and Lake County (west).

history

Porter County was formed on February 7, 1835 from parts of St. Joseph County. It was named after David Porter , a Commodore in the British-American War of 1812. Originally Portersville was the seat of the county administration, but this was moved to Valparaiso in 1837 at the request of the population by Indiana's general assembly .

Porter County has a National Historic Landmark , the Joseph Bailly Homestead . A total of 36 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of September 3, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Porter County had 146,798 people in 54,649 households and 39,729 families. The population density was 136 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.33 percent white, 0.92 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.91 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.26 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.32 percent were descended from two or more races. 4.82 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
