The county is located in southwest Indiana on the east bank of the Wabash River , which forms the border with Illinois . It has an area of 1357 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water.
In the east and south, the county is surrounded by the White River up to its confluence with the Wabash River.

Knox County was formed on June 20, 1790 as the original county from the Northwest Territory. It was named after Henry Knox (1750-1806), a general in the Continental Army in the American War of Independence and first US Secretary of War (1789-1794).
