Vincennes is a city in the American state of Indiana on the Wabash River and is the county seat of Knox County . In 2010 there were 18,423 inhabitants.

The geographic coordinates Vincennes' are 38 ° 40'42 "north latitude, 87 ° 30'58" west longitude. Vincennes is on the Wabash River , about 80 km north of Evansville .

history

Since 1702 at the latest, Vincennes, the oldest town in Indiana , served as a French fur trading post . The site was fortified as a fort in 1732 as part of the safeguarding of the Ohio Valley against British expansion, named after its first commander, François-Marie Bissot de Vincennes . The settlement had belonged to Great Britain since the end of the Seven Years' War in 1763, but retained its French character for a long time.

The British called the settlement Fort Sackville . In 1778 there was an uprising of the French-born inhabitants with the support of the local Indian tribes, who allied themselves with the colonies striving for independence ; the uprising was put down by British soldiers dispatched from Detroit . The settlement was reclaimed by the American pioneer George Rogers Clark on February 25, 1779. The events of this period are described in the 1901 novel Alice of Old Vincennes by Maurice Thompson .

Around 1800 the place became the capital of the newly established Indiana Territory and seat of Governor William Henry Harrison , who later became the ninth President of the United States, who resided here in the Grouseland estate . The Jefferson Academy was founded as early as 1801, which later became Vincennes University , one of the oldest higher education institutions in the USA.

St. Francis Xavier Basilica

Between 1834 and 1898 Vincennes was the seat of a Roman Catholic bishop whose cathedral was the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier ( Basilica minor since 1970). The bishopric was moved to Indianapolis, where the Archdiocese of Indianapolis is now located. Vincennes became the titular bishopric of the Roman Catholic Church .

Grouseland (2011)

Vincennes is a National Historic Landmark with the Grouseland estate . This house served as the residence of future President William Henry Harrison while he was governor of the Indiana Territory . The National Park Service lists a total of 13 buildings and sites for the city that are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of November 30, 2018).

The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.85.

The urban population was divided into 20.0% minors, 20.5% 18–24 year olds, 24.0% 25–44 year olds, 20.3% 45–64 year olds and 15.1% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 women there were 98.6 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 97.3 men.

The median household income in Vincennes was 26,289 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 35,424 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 27,029 versus $ 20,254 for women. The per capita income in Hoquiam was $ 14,993. 20.7% of the population and 15.0% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 25.9% of minors and 12.7% of those aged 65 and over.
