William F. Miller

William Frederick Miller (born November 19, 1925 in Vincennes , Indiana , † September 27, 2017 in Palo Alto , California ) was an American computer scientist , economist and science manager.

Miller studied physics at Purdue University with a bachelor's degree in 1949, a master's degree in 1951 and a doctorate in theoretical physics in 1956. He was then at Argonne National Laboratory , where he was director of the applied mathematics department from 1959. He was also a professor at the University of Chicago from 1962 to 1964 . From 1965 he was a professor of computer science at Stanford University . From 1971 to 1979 he was Vice President and Provost of Stanford University and from 1979 to 1990 President and CEO of SRI International . In addition to his professorship in computer science, he was also professor of management in the Graduate School of Business and a member of the Faculty of Political Economy there. He was also a Senior Fellow of the Institute for International Studies.

He has served on many boards and is a founding member of the Mayfield Fund, an early venture capital firm.

In addition to computer science and computer physics (including core diversification), he dealt with management and economics.

In 1972 he received an honorary doctorate from Purdue University. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (election year 1980), the IEEE , the National Academy of Engineering, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
