Argonne National Laboratory

The Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is one of the oldest and largest research institutes for the United States Department of Energy .

Overview

Since its inception in 1946, the University of Chicago has exercised control over the Department of Energy. The institute is located 25 miles southwest of Chicago . The Argonne National Laboratory (West) branch is located on the grounds of the Idaho National Laboratory near Idaho Falls . Prior to its inception, the University of Chicago's Met Lab was involved in the Manhattan Project that built the first atomic bomb. After the Second World War, the focus was on the development of nuclear reactors for energy supply.

The facility employs 4,000 people, 1,200 of whom are scientists and engineers. The annual budget is approximately US $ 480 million. The scientists and engineers who work there train around 1,000 students and postdoc scientists every year .

tasks

The Argonne National Laboratory is divided into five main areas. Each of these major areas has important responsibilities for the Department of Energy.

  • Basic research: The institute carries out experimental and theoretical research work in physics, chemistry, biology and environmental science.
  • Operation of national scientific facilities: Argonne operates research facilities such as the Advanced Photon Source (APS), the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS) and the Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator System (ATLAS).
  • Promotion of national energy resources: The institute develops advanced future technologies (batteries, fuel cells, superconductivity, reactor safety).
  • Development in the field of the environment: The institute is a leader in the development of solutions to environmental problems and climate protection.
  • National security: the importance has increased in recent years to ward off the threats of terrorism.
