Joseph E. Smadel

Joseph Edwin Smadel (born January 10, 1907 in Vincennes , Indiana , † July 21, 1963 ) was an American physician and virologist .

Smadel was the son of a doctor, studied at the University of Pennsylvania, and received his MD in medicine from Washington University School of Medicine in 1931. He turned to virology in St. Louis and continued in New York at the Rockefeller Institute continued with Homer Swift and Thomas M. Rivers , and worked with Rivers in particular.

During World War II he was chief virologist at the US Army's First Medical General Laboratory in Europe. Among other things, he dealt with a typhoid epidemic in the Mediterranean region in May 1943 and undertook field studies in Kuala Lumpur (as head of the department for virology and rickettsiae of the forerunner of the later Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, WRAIR) in 1948 to determine the effectiveness proven by chloramphenicol against typhoid and typhoid-like diseases. He stayed with WRAIR until 1956, during which time he was involved in research programs against leptospirosis , plague, hemorrhagic fever , arbovirus diseases, cholera, rickettsiae, typhoid and diarrheal diseases.

In 1956 he became an associate director of the National Institutes of Health . In 1963 he became head of the laboratory for virology and rickettsiae, which he remained until his death.

In 1957, Smadel was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and in 1962 he received the Lasker ~ DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award .

The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) named the Joseph E. Smadel Lectures after him.
