Decatur County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The administrative seat ( county seat ) is Greensburg .

The county is located in southeast Indiana, about 50 miles to the east from Ohio , about 100 km to the south from Kentucky , and has an area of 967 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Rush County , Franklin County , Ripley County , Jennings County , Bartholomew County, and Shelby County .
history
Decatur County was formed as the original Free Territory County on December 31, 1821. It was named after Stephen Decatur , a navy commander and national hero.

According to the 2000 census , Decatur County had 24,555 people in 9,389 households and 6,882 families. The population density was 25 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.50 percent white, 0.05 percent African American, 0.11 percent Native American, 0.72 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.10 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.52 percent said the descent from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.54 percent of the population.
Of the 9,389 households, 34.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 60.1 percent were married couples living together, 9.2 percent were single mothers, and 26.7 percent were non-families. 22.8 percent were single households and 9.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.03.
26.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.9 percent between 18 and 24, 29.3 percent between 25 and 44 years. 22.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 94.4 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 40,401 , and the median income for a family is $ 46,453. Males had a median income of $ 31,790 versus $ 24,688 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,582. 6.6 percent of families and 9.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
