Scott County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Scottsburg .

The county is located in southern Indiana, about 30 km from Kentucky and has an area of 499 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Jennings County , Jefferson County , Clark County , Washington County, and Jackson County .
history
Scott County was formed on January 12, 1820 from parts of Clark County, Jefferson County and Jennings County. It was named after Charles Scott , a general in the American Revolutionary War .

As of the 2000 census , Scott County had 22,960 people in 8,832 households and 6,491 families. The population density was 47 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.64 percent white, 0.05 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian and 0.43 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.54 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.97 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 8,832 households, 35.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 57.6 percent were married couples living together, 11.3 percent were single mothers, and 26.5 percent were non-families. 22.5 percent were single households and 8.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
26.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.2 percent between 18 and 24, 30.3 percent between 25 and 44 years old. 23.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 95.6 men.
The median income for a household in the 34,656 USD , and the median income for a family 39,475 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,954 versus $ 22,464 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,065. 10.5 percent of families and 13.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
