Tipton County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Tipton .
geography
The county is located just north of the geographic center of Indiana and covers an area of 674 square kilometers with no significant body of water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Howard County , Grant County , Madison County , Hamilton County, and Clinton County .
history
Tipton County was formed on January 15, 1844 from parts of Cass County, Hamilton County and Miami County. It was named after John Tipton , a surviving officer of the Battle of Tippecanoe .
Two of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of September 4, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Tipton County had 16,577 people in 6,469 households and 4,748 families. The population density was 25 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.35 percent white, 0.14 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.33 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.65 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.21 percent of the population.
Of the 6,469 households, 32.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 62.3 percent were married couples living together, 7.7 percent were single mothers, and 26.6 percent were non-families. 23.1 percent were single households and 11.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 2.97 people.
25.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.2 percent between 18 and 24, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44 years old. 25.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 91.6 men.
The median income for a household in the 48,546 USD , and the median income for a family 56,080 USD. Males had a median income of $ 42,109 versus $ 25,061 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,926. 2.9 percent of families and 5.1 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
