Daviess County is a county in the US state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Washington .

The county is located in southwest Indiana, is about 25 miles west of Illinois and has an area of 1,131 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Greene County , Martin County , Dubois County , Pike County, and Knox Counties .
history
Daviess County was formed on December 24, 1816 from parts of Knox County. It was named after Joseph Hamilton Daviess , a colonel in the US Army who was killed in the Battle of Tippecanoe .
Twelve buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of August 31, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Daviess County had 29,820 people in 10,894 households and 7,821 families. The population density was 27 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.52 percent white, 0.45 percent African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.99 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.55 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.08 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 10,894 households, 35.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 59.8 percent were married couples living together, 8.7 percent were single mothers, and 28.2 percent were non-families. 25.0 percent were single households and 12.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.24.
29.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.6 percent between 18 and 24, 26.2 percent between 25 and 44 years. 21.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 93.6 men.
The median income for a household in the 34,064 USD , and the median income for a family 41,818 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,706 versus $ 20,102 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,015. 9.6 percent of families and 13.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
