Washington County is a county in the US state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Salem .

The county is located in southern Indiana, about 35 km to the southeast from Kentucky and has an area of ​​1,338 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Jackson County , Scott County , Clark County , Floyd County , Harrison County , Crawford County , Orange County, and Lawrence Counties .

history

Washington County was formed on December 21, 1813 from parts of Clark County, Harrison County and Jefferson County. It was named after George Washington , commander in chief of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War and later the first US president .

According to an estimate in 2006, 28,062 people lived here in 10,264 households and 7,585 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer.
