Wayne County is a county in the US state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Richmond .
geography
The county is located in east Indiana, bordering Ohio, and has an area of 1,047 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. In Indiana, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Randolph County , Union County , Fayette County , Henry County . In Wayne County, Hoosier Hill is the highest point in Indiana.
history
Wayne County was formed on November 27, 1810 from parts of Clark County and Dearborn County. It was named after Anthony Wayne , a general who won the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794 during the American Revolutionary War . He was also known as a commander in the Northwest Indian War .
The first seat of the county government was in Salisbury, a now defunct city. Later it was Centerville before it became Richmond.
Wayne County has a National Historic Landmark , the Levi Coffin House . A total of 33 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of September 5, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Wayne County had 71,097 people in 28,469 households and 19,301 families. The population density was 68 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.04 percent white, 5.10 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.51 percent Asian, 0.03 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.69 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.42 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.37 percent of the population.
Of the 28,469 households, 30.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 52.8 percent were married couples living together, 11.4 percent were single mothers, and 32.2 percent were non-families. 27.4 percent were single households and 11.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.92 people.
24.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.2 percent between 18 and 24, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44 years old. 23.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 92.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 88.1 men.
The median income for a household in the 34,885 USD , and the median income for a family 42,811 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,298 versus $ 21,901 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,727. 8.5 percent of families and 11.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
