Washington County is a county in the US state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Salem .

The county is located in southern Indiana, about 35 km to the southeast from Kentucky and has an area of 1,338 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Jackson County , Scott County , Clark County , Floyd County , Harrison County , Crawford County , Orange County, and Lawrence Counties .
history
Washington County was formed on December 21, 1813 from parts of Clark County, Harrison County and Jefferson County. It was named after George Washington , commander in chief of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War and later the first US president .

According to an estimate in 2006, 28,062 people lived here in 10,264 households and 7,585 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.75 percent white, 0.13 percent African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.24 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.58 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.73 percent of the population.
Of the 10,264 households, 35.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 60.2 percent were married couples living together, 9.2 percent were single mothers, and 26.1 percent were non-families. 22.2 percent were single households and 9.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.05.
26.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24, 29.7 percent between 25 and 44 years old. 23.0 percent were between 45 and 64 and 12.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 100.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 97.2 men.
The median income for a household in the 36,630 USD , and the median income for a family 42,618 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,929 versus $ 21,944 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,748. 7.3 percent of families and 10.6 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
