Martin County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Shoals .

The county is located in central southwest Indiana and has an area of ​​882 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Greene County , Lawrence County , Orange County , Dubois County, and Daviess County .

history

Martin County was formed on January 17, 1820 from parts of Daviess County and Dubois County. It was named after John T. Martin , a major from Kentucky .

The county's only entry on the National Register of Historic Places is the Martin County Courthouse (as of September 2, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Martin County had 10,369 people in 4,183 households and 2,877 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.93 percent white, 0.15 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.11 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.52 percent were descended from two or more races.
