Marshall County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is in Plymouth .

The county is located in northern Indiana, about 50 km from Michigan and has an area of 1,165 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: St. Joseph County , Elkhart County , Kosciusko County , Fulton County , Pulaski County, and Starke Counties .

history

Marshall County was formed on February 7, 1835 from parts of Elkhart County and St. Joseph County. It was named after John Marshall , a presiding judge on the United States Supreme Court .

According to the 2000 census , Marshall County had 45,128 people in 16,519 households and 12,191 families. The population density was 39 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.53 percent white, 0.30 percent African American, 0.30 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 2.54 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.01 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.90 percent of the population.

Of the 16,519 households, 35.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 61.3 percent were married couples living together, 8.3 percent were single mothers, and 26.2 percent were non-families. 22.3 percent were single households and 10.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.15.

28.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24, 28.0 percent between 25 and 44 years. 22.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 94.9 men.

The median income for a household in the 42,581 USD , and the median income for a family 48,527 USD. Males had a median income of $ 33,999 versus $ 22,482 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,427. 4.8 percent of families and 6.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
