Bremen is a city in Marshall County in the US state of Indiana . It is located about 130 km east of Chicago .

According to the United States Census Bureau , Bremen had 4,486 inhabitants in 2000. The community area was 5.9 km². The population density is 760 inh / km².

history

The settlement began in 1836, at first the place was called Brothersville, but was renamed New Bremen in 1846 after the German city of Bremen , as many of the early settlers were of German origin. The name part New was dropped later and only Bremen remained. Bremen was officially named a city in March 1871.

Demographic data

According to the United States Census 2000 , 4486 people in 1689 households and 1177 families lived here. The population density was 760 inhabitants per km². The racial the population was composed of 91.42% White, 0.16% African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.31% Asian, and 6.53% from other races. 1.16% were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 12.02% of the population.

Of the 1,689 households, 34.5% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.0% were married couples living together, 9.9% were a single mother, and 30.3% were non-families. 26.9% were made up of single households and 13.3% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.14.

27.3% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.2% between 18 and 24, 27.4% between 25 and 44, 20.2% between 45 and 64, and 15.9% were 65 years or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 92.9 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 88.9 males.

The median income for a household in the 40,185 USD , and the median income for a family 47,768 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,443 versus $ 21,902 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,073. 4.2% of families and 6.5% of the population are below the poverty line.
