Lawrence County is a county in the US state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Bedford .

The county is located in south central Indiana and covers an area of ​​1,171 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Monroe County , Jackson County , Washington County , Orange County , Martin County, and Greene County .

history

James Lawrence

Lawrence County was formed on January 7, 1818 from parts of Orange County. It was named after the captain James Lawrence , who became famous with the saying: "Don't give up the ship" in the British-American War of 1812 after he had already been fatally wounded.

Due to the many limestone finds, the population grew rapidly in the first years of settlement and the county and the city of Bedford was colloquially named "The Limestone Capital of the world".

Twelve buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of September 2, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Lawrence County had 45,922 people in 18,535 households and 13,141 families. The population density was 40 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.92 percent white, 0.39 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.28 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.34 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.78 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.91 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 18,535 households, 31.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 58.5 percent were married couples living together, 9.0 percent were single mothers, and 29.1 percent were non-families. 25.5 percent were single households and 11.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.91 people.

24.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.7 percent between 18 and 24, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44 years. 25.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 91.5 men.

The median income for a household in the 36,280 USD , and the median income for a family 43,109 USD. Males had a median income of $ 34,167 versus $ 21,647 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,653. 7.3 percent of families and 9.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
