Hancock County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Greenfield .

The county is located just east of the geographic center of Indiana and covers an area of 794 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Madison County , Henry County , Rush County , Shelby County , Marion County, and Hamilton County .
history
Hancock County was formed on January 26, 1827 from parts of Madison County. It was named after John Hancock , who was the first to sign the American Declaration of Independence.

According to the 2000 census , Hancock County had 55,391 people in 20,718 households and 16,160 families. The population density was 70 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.44 percent white, 0.13 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.37 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.23 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.62 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.95 percent of the population.
Of the 20,718 households, 36.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 67.5 percent were married couples living together, 7.4 percent were single mothers, and 22.0 percent were non-families. 18.8 percent were single households and 7.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.02.
26.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 6.8 percent between 18 and 24, 30.0 percent between 25 and 44 years. 25.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 94.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 56,416 USD , and the median income for a family 63,083 USD. Males had a median income of $ 44,001 versus $ 28,562 for females. The per capita income was $ 24,966. 1.9 percent of families and 3.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
