Carmel is a city ( City ) in Hamilton County in the state of Indiana in the United States . It's just north of Indianapolis . At the 2010 census , Carmel had 79,191 inhabitants.
Until 1874 the place was called Bethlehem , in 2012 it was named Best Place to Live in America by CNN Money . With 112 roundabouts, or about one for every 800 people, the city is the leader in the USA. The Carmel Arts & Design District with the Carmel International Arts Festival is a tourist attraction.

According to the 2010 census, Carmel has a total area of 125.73 km², of which 122.92 km² (or 97.76%) is land and 2.81 km² (or 2.24%) is water. The city is located in the southwestern part of Hamilton County near Indianapolis. It is bordered to the north by Westfield , to the northeast by Noblesville , to the east by Fishers , to the south by the city of Indianapolis in Marion County and to the west by Zionsville in Boone County . The center of Carmel is 15 miles north of central Indianapolis.

US Highway 31 runs through the city in a north-south direction , Interstate 465 and US Highway 421 sweep the city area to the south and west, respectively.
Demographics
In 2010, 79,191 people lived in 28,997 households in the city. The population density was 644.3 people per square kilometer. There were 28,997 households out of which 41.7% had children under the age of 18 and 66.6% were married couples. 20.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.7% were single people who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.18.
