Parke County is a county in the US state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Rockville . Turkey Run State Park is in the county .

The county is located in western Indiana, about 20 km from Illinois and has an area of 1,166 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Fountain County , Montgomery County , Putnam County , Clay County , Vigo County, and Vermillion Counties .
history
Parke County was formed as the Original Free Territory County on January 9, 1821. It was named after Benjamin Parke , a delegate of the Indiana Territory , commanding a squad of light dragoons at the Battle of Tippecanoe , member of the United States Congress and district judge of Indiana.
Historical objects
To the north of Rockville is the historic Marshall Bridge . The bridge, completed in 1917, spans Rush Creek and was listed on December 22, 1978 by the National Register of Historic Places as a historic monument with the number 78000400.
To the southeast of Mecca , off Old Greencastle Road , is the historic covered Roseville Bridge . The road bridge , built in 1910, spans Big Raccoon Creek and was also listed as a memorial number 78000409 on December 22, 1978 by the National Register of Historic Places .
Parke County has a National Historic Landmark , the West Union Bridge . A total of 44 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of September 3, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Parke County had 17,241 people in 6,415 households and 4,625 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.43 percent white, 2.15 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.23 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.75 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60 percent of the population.
Of the 6,415 households, 30.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 59.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.3 percent were single mothers, and 27.9 percent were non-families. 24.1 percent were single households and 11.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.97 people.
23.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.3 percent between 18 and 24, 28.7 percent between 25 and 44 years. 25.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 91.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 85.8 men.
The median income for a household in the 35,724 USD , and the median income for a family 40,656 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,578 versus $ 20,968 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,986. 9.3 percent of families and 11.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
