The Big Raccoon Creek (from English: big for "big", raccoon for " raccoon ", creek for "brook" or "smaller river") is a left tributary of the Wabash River in the US state of Indiana . The river is about 130 km long and drains an area of 1346 km².
Big Raccoon Creek has its source in Boone County in western central Indiana 10 km west of Lebanon . It flows in the upper reaches in a southwest direction through the counties of Montgomery and Putnam . The village of Ladoga is located on the river. The river will later be dammed in Parke County for purposes of regulating runoff to Cecil M. Harden Lake . The Raccoon State Recreation Area is located on a peninsula by the reservoir . The river passes through the towns of Mansfield and Bridgeton and later turns to the northwest. The Big Raccoon Creek passes the towns of Coxville and Mecca in the lower reaches and finally flows into the Wabash River south of Montezuma . Above Coxville, Little Raccoon Creek joins the river from the right. Big Raccoon Creek is accessible by canoe below Cecil M. Harden Lake .
Historic bridges
Along the river the Big Raccoon Creek are or were located several covered bridges ( covered bridges ):
- Mecca Covered Bridge (built in 1873, closed in 1964, renewed in 1993)
- Portland Mills Covered Bridge (built in 1856, relocated to Little Raccoon Creek in 1961 before the Cecil M. Harden Lake was dammed, renovated in 1996)
- Mansfield Covered Bridge (built in 1867, renewed in 1990)
- Conley's Ford Covered Bridge (built in 1907)
- Bridgeton Covered Bridge (replaced by a reconstruction in 2006)
- Jeffries Ford Covered Bridge (built in 1915, destroyed by fire on April 2, 2002)
- Roseville Covered Bridge (built in 1910, renewed in 1977)
