Owen County is a county in the US state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Spencer .

The county is located in central southwest Indiana, about 70 km to the west from Illinois and has an area of ​​1004 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Putnam County , Morgan County , Monroe County , Greene County, and Clay County .

Eastern Owen County is crossed by the White River , the largest entirely Indiana river. This also forms a short stretch of the Monroe County border. To the north is Mill Creek , a headwaters of the Eel River , with the largest waterfalls in Indiana ( Cataract Falls ), as well as part of Cagles Mill Lake . The Eel River itself flows through the most southwestern corner of Owen County.

history

Owen County was formed on December 21, 1818 from parts of Daviess County and Sullivan County. It was named after Abraham Owen , a colonel and hero of the Battle of Tippecanoe .

According to the 2000 census , Owen County had 21,786 people in 8,282 households and 6,194 families. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.21 percent white, 0.25 percent African American, 0.37 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.16 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.82 percent were descended from two or more races.
