Union County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Liberty .

The county is located in southeast Indiana, borders Ohio to the east and has an area of 420 square kilometers, of which ten square kilometers are water. In Indiana, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Wayne County , Franklin County, and Fayette Counties .
history
Union County was formed on January 5, 1821 from parts of Fayette County, Franklin County, and Wayne County.
Three structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of September 4, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Union County had 7,349 people in 2,793 households and 2,072 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.69 percent white, 0.23 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.16 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.44 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.30 percent of the population.
Of the 2,793 households, 35.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 62.6 percent were married couples living together, 8.2 percent were single mothers, and 25.8 percent were non-families. 22.4 percent were single households and 10.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.05.
27.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.7 percent between 18 and 24, 28.5 percent between 25 and 44 years. 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 93.7 men.
The median income for a household in the 36,672 USD , and the median income for a family 41,752 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,859 versus $ 21,617 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,549. 7.9 percent of families and 9.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
