The county is located in south-southwest Indiana on the Ohio River , which forms the border with Kentucky . It has an area of 1,039 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. The following counties border Spencer County:

history
Spencer County was formed on January 10, 1818 from former parts of Perry County and Warrick County. It was named after Spier Spencer (around 1770-1811), a hero in the battle of Tippecanoe .
Spencer County has a National Historic Landmark , the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial . A total of 7 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of September 3, 2017).
