Steuben County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Angola .

The county is located in the extreme northeast of Indiana, borders Ohio to the east and Michigan to the north and has an area of 835 square kilometers, of which 36 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: DeKalb County , Noble County, and LaGrange Counties .
history
Steuben County was formed on February 7, 1835 from parts of LaGrange County. It was named after Friedrich Wilhelm August Steuben , a German-American general who was born in Magdeburg and who reorganized George Washington's army during the American War of Independence .

According to the 2000 census , Steuben County had 33,214 people in 12,738 households and 8,916 families. The population density was 42 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.19 percent white, 0.37 percent African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 0.40 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.85 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.84 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.06 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 12,738 households, 32.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 57.0 percent were married couples living together, 8.5 percent were single mothers, and 30.0 percent were non-families. 24.3 percent were single households and 9.1 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.00 people.
25.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 10.4 percent between 18 and 24, 28.5 percent between 25 and 44 years old. 23.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 102 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 101.2 men.
The median income for a household in the 44,089 USD , and the median income for a family 50,567 USD. Males had a median income of $ 35,300 versus $ 23,856 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,647. 4.9 percent of families and 6.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
