Mark Neil Brown (born November 18, 1951 in Valparaiso , Indiana ) is a retired American astronaut .
Brown received a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from Purdue University in 1973 and a master's degree in aerospace engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1980 . Upon leaving Purdue University, he went to the US Air Force and got his pilot's license there in 1974. Brown joined the Johnson Space Center in 1980 as an engineer with the Flight Activities Section .
Astronaut activity
In May 1984, Brown was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA.
STS 61-N
Brown received his first assignment to a space shuttle crew in December 1985. He was designated as a mission specialist for the US Department of Defense's STS-61-N mission. Other crew members were Commander Brewster Shaw , pilot Mike McCulley , the other mission specialists Jim Adamson and David Leestma , as well as payload specialist Frank Casserino of the Air Force. However, this flight was canceled after the Challenger disaster . In 1986 and 1987, Brown helped redevelop the space shuttle solid rocket .
STS-28
In February 1988 Brown was reassigned to a new mission. On August 8, 1989, he flew into space for the first time on the Columbia space shuttle . STS-28 was a US Department of Defense flight with a secret payload.
STS-48
On September 12, 1991, Brown took off into space on the space shuttle Discovery . During this five-day mission, the UARS satellite was deployed to explore the upper atmosphere .

Brown left the NASA and Air Force in July 1993 and went to the General Research Corporation (now AT & T ) to Dayton ( Ohio ). In 2003, Brown moved to Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), where he is vice president and general manager, aerospace.

Mark Brown and his wife Lynne have two daughters.
