Ebenezer Dumont

Ebenezer Dumont (born November 23, 1814 in Vevay , Indiana , †  April 16, 1871 in Indianapolis , Indiana) was an American politician . Between 1863 and 1867 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ebenezer Dumont had a good primary education. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession in Vevay. At the same time he embarked on a political career. In 1838 he was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives . From 1839 to 1845 Dumont acted as treasurer of the city of Vevay. During the Mexican-American War he was a lieutenant colonel in a volunteer unit. Between 1850 and 1853 he was again a member of the state parliament and temporarily acted as speaker . During the civil war between 1861 and 1863 he was an officer in an infantry unit in the Union Army . He rose to brigadier general .

In the congressional elections of 1862 Dumont was elected as a unionist in the sixth constituency of Indiana in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Albert Porter on March 4, 1863 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1867 . During his second term in office he represented the Republican Party . Until 1865, Dumont was chairman of the District of Columbia Administration Committee. He then headed the Ministry of Interior's expenditure control committee between 1865 and 1867 . During his time as a congressman, the civil war ended. Since 1865, the work of Congress has been shaped by the conflict between the Republican Party and President Andrew Johnson .

In 1866, Ebenezer Dumont decided not to run again for Congress. In 1871, President Ulysses S. Grant made him governor of the Idaho Territory . Dumont died in Indianapolis on April 16, 1871, before he could take up this office. In his place Thomas M. Bowen took over the post.
