George H. Dunn

George Hedford Dunn (born November 15, 1794 in New York City , New York , †  January 12, 1854 in Lawrenceburg , Indiana ) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1839 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1817 George Dunn came to Lawrenceburg, Indiana. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1822, he began to work in this profession in his new hometown. He also embarked on a political career. Between 1828 and 1833 he was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives three times . He campaigned for the construction of a railroad in Indiana and was later President of the Cincinnati & Indianapolis Railroad Co. until his death .

Dunn became a member of the Whig Party, founded in 1835 . In 1834 he ran unsuccessfully for the congress . In the congressional election of 1836 he was then elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded Amos Lane on March 4, 1837 . Since he was defeated in 1838 by the Democrat Thomas Smith , he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1839.

After retiring from the US House of Representatives, George Dunn returned to practice as a lawyer. Between 1841 and 1844 he was the Indiana State Treasury Secretary. He then served as a judge in Dearborn County . He died in Lawrenceburg on January 12, 1854.
