John Hanson Farquhar

John Hanson Farquhar (born December 20, 1818 in Union Bridge , Carroll County , Maryland , †  October 1, 1873 in Indianapolis , Indiana ) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1867 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Hanson attended public schools in his home country. In 1833 he moved to Richmond , Indiana with his parents . Until 1840 he worked as a machinist on a shipping canal. After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar, he began to work in Brookville in this profession. In 1842 and 1843 he was an administrative clerk with the Indiana Senate ; In 1844 he was employed by the Indiana House of Representatives . In 1852 Farquhar ran unsuccessfully for Congress .

During the Civil War , John Farquhar was captain of an infantry unit in the Union Army . Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1864 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded William S. Holman on March 4, 1865 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1866, he could only complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1867 . This was marked by the tension between his party and President Andrew Johnson .

In 1870 he moved to Indianapolis where he worked in the banking industry. He was then named Secretary of State of Indiana by Governor Conrad Baker . John Farquhar died in Indianapolis on October 1, 1873.
