Nikolaus Stör von Schweidnitz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nikolaus Stör von Schweidnitz (also Nikolaus Stoer ; Nikolaus Stöhr ; Nikolaus Ster ; Latin Nicolaus Stor de Swydnicz ; Nicolai Stoer ; Czech Mikuláš Stor ze Svídnice ; * in Schweidnitz ; † 1424 ) taught theology at Charles University in Prague , of which he was rector in 1401. From 1409 he taught first at the artist faculty and probably from 1411/12 at the theological faculty of the University of Leipzig .

Life

Nikolaus, who came from the Silesian Schweidnitz after his original name , studied from 1387 at the artistic faculty of the Prague Charles University, where he chose his compatriot Johannes von Münsterberg as study supervisor. In the winter semester of 1389/90 he obtained the academic degree of a baccalaureus and in January 1393 he became a master of the arts . As such, he began lecturing in the same year at the artist faculty, from which he was elected dean in 1399. In 1401 he held the post of rector of Charles University.

Because of the disputes at the university, in which, in addition to the reform movement of Jan Hus , the conflicts between the Bohemian and university members of other nations also played a role, which finally led to the Kuttenberg decree in 1409 , Nikolaus Stör left Charles University. Together with numerous other Prague masters and scholars , he went to the newly founded University of Leipzig , whose founding rector was Johannes von Münsterberg. In Leipzig, where he was a college graduate of the "Collegium majus", he was initially again a master of the artist faculty, where he worked in 1410 as an examiner.

It is not known what theological degree he obtained in Prague and from when he joined the theological faculty in Leipzig. In any case, in 1412 he wrote a book about Holy Mass . Since he is referred to in this manuscript as "doctor sacre theologie" and no longer appears as an examiner at the artist faculty in 1412, it is likely that he was a professor of theology as early as 1411 or 1412.

Post Comment

Nikolaus Stör was recorded in the Leipzig registers without his name of origin. Presumably for this reason he was confused in later records with Nikolaus von Liegnitz ( Nikolaus de Legenicz ), who held the post of rector of Leipzig University in 1421. Since Nikolaus Stör is repeatedly referred to in the Prague documents with the designation of origin “von Schweidnitz / de Swidenicz” but never as “von Liegnitz” or “de Legenicz”, they are probably two different people.
