Adolph Franz (born December 21, 1842 in Langenbielau , Reichenbach district , Silesia ; † November 6, 1916 in Baden-Baden ) was a German Catholic theologian , editor and politician of the Center Party .

Life

Franz attended the Catholic grammar school in Glatz , where he passed the Abitur. He then studied theology at the Universities of Breslau and Münster , which he completed with a doctorate in theology . After his ordination in 1867, he was given a chaplaincy in Sprottau .

Later he was appointed to the repetition of the episcopal Konvikt in Breslau. Between 1872 and 1873 he was editor-in-chief of the Catholic-oriented Schlesische Volkszeitung . He performed the same function from 1874 to 1877 at the Silesian Church Gazette. Between 1878 and 1881 he succeeded Paul Majunke as editor-in-chief of Germania , one of the leading Catholic daily newspapers based in Berlin. He owed this position in particular to the advocacy of Ludwig Windthorst .

In Breslau he was canon from 1882 to 1892 as well as councilor of the prince-bishop's secret chancellery and curator of various orphanages.

Franz was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives for the Center Party between 1875 and 1882 . In a substitute election on September 18, 1876, he was elected to the German Reichstag in the constituency of Opole 3 (Großstrehlitz - Kosel) , to which he belonged until his resignation on February 23, 1892. During the great miners' strike in the Ruhr area in 1889 , he showed understanding for the miners despite his own economic interests in mining. In the context of the trade union dispute after the turn of the century, he was on the side of the integralists of the Berlin direction.
During the Kulturkampf , Franz was a vehement opponent of Otto von Bismarck , whom he repeatedly attacked as a member of parliament and even more so in polemical newspaper articles. The resulting charges often resulted in fines and even imprisonment.

When Robert Herzog was appointed Prince-Bishop of Breslau in 1882 , he brought Franz to the Breslau Cathedral and appointed him a member of the cathedral chapter . Prince-Bishop Georg von Kopp also served Franz as an advisor.

In 1893 he moved to Gmunden in Austria. In 1907 he was appointed honorary professor for liturgy in Munich . Most recently he lived in Baden-Baden. From a scientific point of view, he has particularly researched the medieval liturgy.
