Edgar Doud Whitcomb (born November 6, 1917 in Hayden , Jennings County , Indiana , † February 4, 2016 in Rome , Indiana) was an American politician . He was the 43rd governor of the state of Indiana between 1969 and 1973  .

Early years and political advancement

Edgar Whitcomb visited until the Second World War, the Indiana University . During the war he was an army pilot. He later wrote a book about his war experiences in the Philippines . Upon his return home, Whitcomb studied law at Indiana University's Law School . For the next 30 years he practiced his profession in southern Indiana. At the same time he was a member of the reserve of the US Air Force.

The Republicans Whitcomb was 1951-1953 member of the Senate of Indiana . In 1954, he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the United States House of Representatives . An attempt to be elected to the US Senate also failed in 1964. Instead, he was elected Secretary of State of Indiana in 1966 . Two years later, as his party's candidate, he made the leap to the office of governor.

Indiana Governor

Whitcomb's four-year tenure began on January 13, 1969. In this came the climax of the Vietnam War , for which Indiana had to deploy soldiers. At the end of his four years, he left office on January 9, 1973.

In 1976 Whitcomb ran again for a seat in the US Senate. This attempt, too, was unsuccessful; he lost in the primary of his party to Richard Lugar . Then he went back to work as a lawyer. At the age of 68, he retired in 1985 and went on a number of offshore sailing trips. He lived very old in his hometown of Hayden in southern Indiana. He was married to Patricia Whitcomb, with whom he had five children.
