James A. Mount

James Atwell Mount (born March 24, 1843 in Montgomery County , Indiana , † January 16, 1901 in Crawfordsville , Indiana) was an American politician and between 1897 and 1901 the 24th governor of Indiana.

Early years

James Mount attended local schools in his home country. In 1862 he joined the American Civil War as a soldier in the Union Army . After the war ended, he attended the Presbyterian Academy in Lebanon, Indiana. After leaving school, he became a successful farmer in Montgomery County . There he also gave lectures on agricultural issues, which he could create a political base. Mount was a member of the Republican Party and was elected to the Indiana State Senate in 1888. There he remained for four years until 1892. In 1890 he applied unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Congress. Instead, he was elected as his party's candidate for governor of Indiana in 1896.

Indiana Governor

Mount took up his new office on January 11, 1897. During his four-year tenure, the country's prison system was reformed and a kind of Labor Commissioners Office was established. In addition, a Medical Examination Board has been created . During Mount's tenure, the Spanish-American War fell , for which he had to muster and recruit troops for the army. He died two days after the end of his term on January 16, 1901. He was married to Catherine Boyd, with whom he had three children.
