Emmett Branch

Emmett Forrest Branch (born May 16, 1874 in Martinsville , Indiana , † February 23, 1932 ) was an American politician and between 1924 and 1925 the 31st governor of Indiana.

Early years

Emmett Branch attended the University of Indiana after elementary school until 1896 . After completing a law degree, he was admitted to the bar in 1899. He then practiced in his new profession in Martinsville. During the Spanish-American War he was a lieutenant or first lieutenant in the US Army. He was then a member of the Indiana National Guard. In 1916 he was used again militarily during a border conflict with Mexico. During the First World War he rose to lieutenant colonel. Among other things, he was the commander of a unit stationed in Texas.

Political career

In addition to his military career, Branch was politically active since 1903. As a member of the Republican Party , he was a member of the Indiana state parliament between 1903 and 1909. In 1920 he was elected as his party's candidate for the new Lieutenant Governor of Indiana. After the resignation of Acting Governor Warren McCray on April 30, 1924 , who was charged with fraud, Branch fell to the office of governor of Indiana as his deputy. He had to end the beginning of his predecessor's term of office by January 12, 1925. In the remaining eight months as governor, Branch campaigned for the further expansion of the road network and an improvement in the school system. At that time, the first safety conference took place in Indiana (State Safety Conference).

Emmett Branch did not run for re-election in 1924. Therefore, he resigned from the governor's office in January 1925. He then withdrew from politics and devoted himself to his private interests. Emmett Branch died in 1932. He was married to Katherine Bain. They had a child together.
