John A. Watkins

John A. Watkins (born March 8, 1898 in Marion , Indiana , †  February 26, 1973 in Indianapolis , Indiana) was an American politician . Between 1949 and 1953 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Indiana.

Career

Nothing is known about the youth and schooling of John Watkins. He later worked in the newspaper industry all his life. He edited various newspapers in his home state of Indiana. During World War I he served in the American armed forces; During the Second World War he was a member of the US occupation forces in Germany and was the military commander of the city of Bamberg . He was also a member of numerous veterans' organizations. He served as the head of the American Legion for Indiana in 1940 and 1941 .

Politically, Watkins joined the Democratic Party . In 1948 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Indiana alongside Henry Schricker . He held this office between January 10, 1949 and January 12, 1953. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . After the end of his time as Lieutenant Governor, he continued his activities in the newspaper business. He died on February 26, 1973 in Indianapolis.
