Hugh Thomas Miller

Hugh Thomas Miller (born March 21, 1867 in Johnson County , Indiana , †  May 26, 1947 in Columbus , Bartholomew County , Indiana) was an American politician . Between 1905 and 1909 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Indiana.

Career

Hugh Miller studied until 1888 at Butler University , where he then taught French between 1889 and 1892. In 1892 and 1893 he studied history in Paris and Berlin . He taught this subject between 1893 and 1899 at Butler University. From 1899 he worked in the banking industry. There he was employed as an assistant cashier at Irwin's Bank in Columbus . Politically, he joined the Republican Party and in 1902 he became a member of the Indiana House of Representatives .

In 1904 Miller was elected Lieutenant Governor of Indiana alongside Frank Hanly . He held this office between January 9, 1905 and January 11, 1909. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . In 1914 he ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate . From 1910 he was a director and vice president at the Union Trust Company . He was also a director of the Union Starch and Refining Company and the Cummins Engine Company for many years . He died on May 26, 1947.
