Mortimer Nye

Mortimer Nye (born November 12, 1838 in Wadsworth , Medina County , Ohio , †  July 6, 1901 in LaPorte , Indiana ) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1897 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Indiana.

Career

Mortimer Nye initially worked as a teacher. After studying law and being admitted as a lawyer in 1862, he began to work in this profession in LaPorte. At times he was the legal representative of this city and LaPorte County . Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1873, 1875, 1883 and 1885 he was elected mayor of LaPorte. He held this office for a total of eight years. In the presidential election of 1884 he was one of the electors who officially elected Grover Cleveland as US President .

In 1892, Nye was elected Lieutenant Governor of Indiana alongside Claude Matthews . He held this office between January 9, 1893 and January 11, 1897. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . On July 4, 1901, he gave a speech on the American Independence Day in LaPorte. He suffered a stroke in the process, which he succumbed two days later.
