John R. Cravens

John Robert Cravens (* 1819 in Madison , Indiana ; † 1899 there ) was an American politician . Between 1861 and 1863 he was acting lieutenant governor of the state of Indiana.

Career

Nothing is known about the early years of John Cravens. As a member of the Republican Party he was elected to the Indiana Senate and was its chairman in 1861 ( President Pro Tempore ). When Governor Henry Smith Lane resigned from office to move to the US Senate , his deputy Oliver Hazard Perry Throck Morton became the new governor. Thereupon Cravens was constitutionally acting lieutenant governor of Indiana as President Pro Tempore of the State Senate. He held this office between January 16, 1861 and his resignation on October 9, 1863. He then served as an officer in the Civil War. From 1868 to 1871, he was again a member of the Indiana Senate. For some time he also owned the Madison Banner newspaper . He also ran a mill and worked in the railroad business.
